Pi Day
March 14, Thursday
Pi Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated around the world on March 14th to honor the mathematical constant π (pi). The day was chosen because the date 03/14 (in month/day format) corresponds to the first three digits of π — 3.14.History
Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 by physicist Larry Shaw at the Exploratorium in California. He proposed the day as a way to raise awareness of mathematics, as well as a fun way to honor the number π, which plays an important role in geometry, physics, and other sciences.
How it is celebrated
Mathematical events. Many schools and universities host lectures, competitions, and presentations related to the number π, its properties, and applications.
Culinary traditions. Baking and eating pies (hence the play on the words "π" and "pie") are popular on this day. Many people bake a round pie in honor of this number.
Games and competitions. Various games are also held on this day, for example, to remember the digits of the number π or to solve mathematical puzzles.
